Hamel earns seventh-place medal at 1A State XC meet

TIGER SOPHOMORE JONATHAN HAMEL earned a seventhplace medal at the state cross country meet last Saturday.

Stockton Tiger sophomore Jonathan Hamel set another PR on his way to a seventh-place finish at the Class 1A State Cross Country Championships held last Saturday morning at Sand Plum Nature Trail west of Victoria. Hamel crossed the finish line in a time of 17:16.5, 17 seconds faster than his time last year at State, which earned him a 13th-place medal. Senior Corbin Ricke of Spearville won the 2021 race in a time of 16:26.6, outdistancing the other 94 competitors.

Hamel’s impressive showing at this year’s Championships capped off a very successful season for the young harrier, in which he captured both the Mid-Continent League and Regional Championships, as well as other firstplace finishes.

Hamel had a nice contingent of Tiger fans on hand at State who got to enjoy the beautiful day while cheering him on to the awards stand. The individual medalists were as follows: 1. Corbin Ricke (Sr.), Spearville, 16:26.6; 2. Christian Darrah (Sr.), Canton-Galva, 16:41.4; 3. Blake Yoder (So.), Hutch-Central Christian, 16:48.3; 4. Elijah Zortman (Sr.), Fowler, 16:52.1; 5. Logan Keith (So.), Meade, 16:57.2; 6. Andrew Racy (Sr.), South Gray, 17:07.5; 7. Jonathan Hamel (So.), Stockton, 17:16.5; 8. James White III (So.), Pretty Prairie, 17:19.1; 9. Eli Gruenbacher (Sr.), Quinter, 17:21.0; 10. Grady Buessing (So.), Axtell, 17:24.0; 11. Brenden Ellis (Jr.), Ingalls, 17:28.0; 12. Graham Bales (Jr.), Osborne, 17:34.5; 13. Morgan Becker (Sr.), Canton-Galva, 17:41.4; 14. Zach Rose (Sr.), Sylvan-Lucas Unified, 17:46.5; 15. Treyton Olander (Jr.), Little River, 17:50.6; 16. Jonas Letourneau (Fr.), Beloit-St. John’s, 17:51.3; 17. Jobjosiah Muthiani (Fr.), Meade, 17:52.2; 18. Colby Hanzlicek (Sr.) , Wetmore, 17:52.9; 19. Alex Zortman (Fr.), Fowler, 17:58.0; 20. Matthew Elder (Jr.), Quinter, 18:00.1.

The Meade boys won State with a score of 31. Quinter finished second with 40 points, and Classical School of Wichita was third with a 96. As for area schools, La Crosse finished eighth (119), Osborne was 10th (132), and Beloit-St. John’s was 12th (161).
