SPOTLIGHTING THE YEAR…1965

* And So They Say: Ruth Phelps: “I get my daughter’s clothes after she outgrows them.” Daisy LeSage: “The East was awfully pretty this time of year, particularly the mountains in Pennsylvania, but Rooks County looked awfully pretty to me when I got back.” Tom Shaw (at bowling alley grand opening): “This is certainly a nice place. I wish they had something like it when I was a kid.”

* Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Bates and family, with the help of their friends, had moved over the weekend into their beautiful new three-bedroom, full basement home.

* Mr. and Mrs. Tony Kreller, Kathy, Mark and Dennis had spent the weekend at St. Francis Seminary at Victoria visiting their son and brother, Mike, who was a student there. The annual talent show had been held and Mike and two of his classmates had placed second with their comedy skit, “Noah and the Ark.”

* Forty Kansas State University freshmen had received a $200.00 scholarship from Union Pacific Railroad with Stockton graduate Marsha Ann Bouchey one of the recipients.

* The Stockton Fire Department had made a run to the football field where it had been summoned when smoke was seen rolling out of the openings at the recently constructed press box. On reaching he scene, it was discovered that someone had placed the trash barrel directly under the structure and started a smudge in it, which was putting out a lot of smoke. It was believed it was the result of pranksters. No damage was done, but there was a near traffic accident at the highway intersection as the fire run was being made.

* Stockton Lanes had been a very popular place during its Grand Opening with proprietors Adolph and Lucille Laska serving coffee and doughnuts to all the visitors. Prizes were won by Marilyn Cunningham and Lucia Hamilton each winning a bowling ball, Nina Ballinger winning six lines of bowling, Cheryl Turnbull winning four lines of bowling, Judy Anderson winning three lines of bowling, and Chas Farr winning two lines of bowling.

* From The Feminine Slant By The Office Cat: They say money talks but to me it has never spoken above a whisper.

* Looking Backward Fourteen Years Ago: Four hunters from Atwood had paid a total of $200.00 in fines for shooting pheasant here out of season. The law firm of Hindman and Krysl had moved into their new law office on the south side of the middle business block on Main Street. Word had been received that Stockton was to have a traffic signal at the highway intersections of US 24 and US 183.

* On sale at Oyer Food Market were two pounds of fresh lean ground beef for 89¢, one hundred pounds of red McClure potatoes for $3.98, a five-pound bag of ruby red grapefruit for 55¢, and six candy bars, gum or life savers (your choice) for 25¢.

* A birthday party was held for Randall Peacock for his 6th birthday. Those present for the event were Wendell Peacock, Kendall Peacock, Peter Bellerive, Scott Bennett, Frank Dix, Jeff Jarrett, Danny Miller, Jimmy Oliva, Ray Palmer, Craig Roy, Wayne Sander, Jesse Hulse, Sharon Hulse, Lila Hulse, Mickey Strutt, Gail Strutt and Sheila Butler. Refreshments of ice cream, cake and cookies were enjoyed by all. Each child received a Halloween treat before going home.

* Showing at the Nova Theatre were the movies, “Mister Moses” starring Robert Mitchum and Carroll Baker, and “The Comedy of Terrors” starring Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, Boris Karloff and Basil Rathbone.
