SPOTLIGHTING THE YEAR…1969
* And So They Say: Blackie Randall: “The reason I get more rain than anyone else is because I’m the only person in town who knows how to put up a rain gauge.” Clark Stocking: “I don’t like the idea of my wife quitting work. All she will do then will be to stay at home and think up things for me to do.” Kenneth Buss: “It pays me to take my wife places. She won a prize when I took her out Saturday night.” Barbara Riffel: “I’m afraid that when Cindy gets out on the farm she’ll be just like Ellie May with all her critters.”
* Lt. Norman Wilkerson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Merle E. Wilkerson of Plainville, was one of the 31 crewmen of the reconnaissance plane shot down last week by North Korea over the Sea of Japan. The parents had received a letter from him the day before the tragedy saying he was leaving on a logging mission. He and his wife had been living in Atsugui, Japan since September. Wilkerson had lived in Plainville since 1953 and had graduated in 1961 from Plainville High School. He then attended Fort Hays State College and received his degree in 1966.
*TheStockton FFA Livestock Judging team won the Area Livestock Judging Contest held at the Lewis Hereford Farms at Larned. Gale Maddy was the second high individual, and Rodney Carsten was the fourth. Larry Riffel was in tenth place. The other team members were Ted Odle and Ronnie Jackson.
* Becky Anderson of Woodston was selected as the Concordia District UMYF President for the 1969-1970 term. The officers were selected at the United Methodist Spring Rally held recently in Washington. All new officers were to attend the Leadership Sensitivity Training near Scott City in June.
* From The Feminine Slant By The Office Cat: We have never ceased to wonder how old King Solomon got along with those thousands of mothers- in-law.
* Looking Backward Fourteen Years Ago: Quite a number of houses from Webster and the nearby farms were being moved to make way for the Webster Reservoir. It was lilac time in Stockton, and the displays were exceptionally gorgeous. Carlis Cassel had rated an I at the State Music Festival on saxophone. The Stockton High School Golf team had taken the MCL title. Mr. and Mrs. Philo Hammond had returned home from their southern winter trip with their racehorse.
* On sale at Slansky IGA were fresh pork chops for 79¢ a pound, three cucumbers for 33¢, two cans of Rainbow cut green beans for 25¢, eight cans of Pets Choice dog food for 69¢, and five ears of corn for 49¢.
* The engagement of Miss Mary Lou Gullett to Mr. John Carmichael was announced. A June wedding was planned.
* Mr. and Mrs. George Oller had announced the engagement of their daughter, Regina Arleen, to Frank Parsons, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Parsons of Alden. A May wedding was planned.
* Showing at the Park Drive-In was “The Silencers,” starring Dean Martin, Stella Stevens, and Daliah Lavi. The Saturday Night Movie Bonus was “For Singles Only,” starring John Saxon, Mary Ann Mobley, and Lana Wood.
