What Was Going On 14 Years Ago
Scheduled for completion in the summer of 2008, the new hospital was progressing despite bouts of wet weather.
A Home and Garden Tour in and around Stockton was planned for July 1st, sponsored by the Sigma Phi ESA. Featured on the tour were Cheryl and David Calvin at 416 N. First, Linda and Randy Cross at 708 N. Elm, Marian and Carrol Conyac at 1440 18 Terrace, and Janie and Rick Lowry at 1045 11 Road.
The wheat harvest had begun in the Stockton area with scattered storms causing some interruptions. Jimmy Jackson brought in the first load of wheat at the Stockton elevator on Sunday, June 17, with a moisture content of 14.5 and a test weight of 57.2. Marvin Jackson was right behind Jimmy with a moisture content recorded at 13.7 and a test weight of 57. The Woodston Coop also saw its first load of wheat brought in on Monday, June 18 by Rick Maynard. His wheat had a moisture content of 13.4 and test weight of 59.6. The community of Stockton and the surrounding area were invited to welcome home Father Duane Gary Roy OSB, visiting from Cristalandia, Tocantins, Brazil. He was accompanied by nine Brazilians. In Father Roy’s honor, the public was invited to a tree planting ceremony, July 14, on Main Street, near the Nova Theatre. Following that planting, a Friendship Tree would be presented by the visiting Brazilians to the City of Stockton, at a location near the Rooks County Bakery.
Stockton High School graduate Andrea Gallaway had recently graduated from Multnomah Bible College in Portland, Ore., with a BS in Bible and Theology and Cross Cultural Studies.
During the Swing Into Summer Festival, Aaron Patton gave a great concert on May 25. As part of the intermission, Patton got down on one knee for a surprise proposal to his girlfriend. Both were students at Wichita State University.
David and Alissa (Gallaway) Mauk of Topeka announced the birth of their daughter, Madelyn Marie Mauk, born June 14, 2007.
Showing at the Nova Theatre was “Surf’s Up,” another penguin movie, on the heals of “March of the Penguins” and “Happy Feet.”
Obituaries were published for Roy J. Haney (1922), William Junior “Dude” Chesnut (1933), Georgia Ann “Jo” Marcotte (1941), and Irene LaVonne “Vonnie” Jones (1945).
Looking Back 14 Years Ago, Spotlighting the Year... 1993 — Stockton Monument Co.’s new owners were having a grand opening. Ground was broken for the new museum on South Highway 183. Darrell Sutor was interviewed about the program in 1945 offering German prisoners as laborers on their ranch. Chris and Ginger Kollman and family had been on a Caribbean cruise and to Disney World. 56 Years Ago, Spotlighting the Year... 1951 — Former Stockton City Manager and one of Stockton’s most-loved citizens, O. M. Goodrich, passed away on June 19. Fire in a sheep shed at Mrs. Maggie Albright’s farm destroyed 150 little chickens belonging to Mrs. Emma Colburn as well as completely destroying the shedDale, age 5, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Leech, was very ill as the result of measles. His condition was considered critical.
What Stocktonites Were Doing 98 Years Ago, Spotlighting the Year... 1909 — Dan Shaw’s house on Bow Creek has been struck by lightning three times, abundantly refuting the old statement that lightning never strikes twice in the same spot. Jack Shaw’s house was once struck by lightning while Dan was living in it so it proves that Dan himself is a magnetic lodestone that draws the electric fluid. For his own safety Dan should at once provide himself with a ground wire.
