Bonita and Leo Oliva traveled to the Cancun Mexican Grill in Hays on Tuesday last week to have lunch with nephew Captain Tim Maresch, USAF, and Tim’s parents, Daryl and Shirley Maresch, Aunts Judy Coen and Sharon and Uncle David, Hays. Tim had returned from serving three and a half months at the Bagram Base, Afghanistan. He flies an F-16 and usually flew three days a week with each flight lasting 5 hours. On leave, he traveled to Dubai, United Arab Emirate and visited the local tourist attractions. He will be based briefly at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada for continued flight training. Then he will participate in military exercises in Alaska before being deployed to South Korea. The family gathered in the lobby of Ellis Estates for more conversation and dessert in the afternoon.
Bonita Oliva traveled to Hays Friday evening to take her granddaughter, Katerina Pabst, out for pizza at Old Chicago to celebrate Mother’s Day. Grandson Tanner Pabst and great-grandsons William and Charlie Pabst were also guests for a fun time together.
Dan Pabst invited his mother, Bonita Oliva, out for lunch at El Dos de Oros in Phillipsburg on Saturday.
On Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 9, at Cedar Christian Church, our speaker was Gwen Cooper of Alton, in place of Roger who was not feeling well. How appropriate for Mother’s Day and Gwen read an essay titled, “Mom”. Peggy Mullen, pianist, played “Faith of Our Mother’s.” The Lord’s Prayer was recited. Kirby Mullen offered the prayers and he and Steven Melton served Communion. Following worship, cupcakes were given in honor of Mother’s Day. Our minister on Sunday, May 16, will be Darel Boston.
May is definitely graduation month. Congratulations to those seniors with Woodston ties. They include: Jace Hull, Bryce Graf, Venessa Yakish, and John Yakish. Eighth-grade graduates are: Emma Yakish, Kalea Graf, Ava Dix (granddaughter of Kathy and Frank Dix) and Emerson Lowry (great-nephew of Steven and Linda Melton). Between our two families, Steven and I have four graduating from college and two high school graduates.
Steven had a surprise visitor last Tuesday when former Woodston High School classmate, Steven McDowell, came in Jones Oil Company to visit. Steve and his wife are spending three weeks traveling the country. Living in California but now in Arizona, Steve had been unable to attend any of their class reunions. Thursday evening, the McDowells, Patty Mason Northup, Janese Denio Townley, Max (Linn) Dibble and Steven and I met at the Sand Trap in Phillipsburg for a mini-reunion. So many stories were told. I believe this Class of 1965 was ornery and before we knew it, the time was 11:30. The group was very appreciative to learn that Steven of Arizona had taken cae of everyone’s meal at the end of the evening.
Having not seen much of news telecast for last week, I had no knowledge of space satellites. Late Friday evening, I was closing the chicken coop doors and noticed a perfect line of moving lights traveling in a northeast pattern. When counting them, I became alarmed and figured we were either being invaded or someone had given the geese headlamps until Steve informed me of the satellites!
Dan Melton, Walton, arrived Saturday morning to help work the calves and haul cattle to pasture. He left early Sunday morning to return home. How sad and empty the corrals seem with no animals.
The Woodston United Methodist Church had services on Sunday. Margaret Welker led the singing. Pastor Michelle Byerly read scripture John 15:9- 17. Her sermon was titled, “Building the Church: Abide in My Love”. The closing hymn was, “Love Divine all Loves Excelling.”
Administrative Council will meet Tuesday, May 11, at Fellowship Hall, at 7. Sunday, June 6 , 10:30, will be the last church service at Woodston. Dinner will follow in Fellowship Hall.
