Osborne County Sheriff retires
OSBORNE—The Osborne County Sheriff’s Office announced the official retirement of longstanding sheriff Curtis Miner on Monday, January 20th. Miner served Osborne County for 32 years and has been a Certified Law Enforcement Officer since 1977.After completing the police academy, Miner served as the City of Osborne’s police chief until 1979. Then Miner moved and was a Coffey County Detective/LT from 1979 to 1984, ultimately moving back to Osborne County and becoming undersheriff from 1984 to 1993, being elected sheriff in 1993 and serving the community until retiring on Monday. Kansas man hospitalized after violent pickup crash
SMITH COUNTY—The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1994 Ford Ranger driven by Robert D. Hoffert, 32, Mankato, was westbound on 140 Road approximately three miles west of U. S. 281, just before 9:00 a.m. on Friday, January 17th, in Smith County. The pickup entered the south ditch, traveled off the south side of the bridge, overturned in midair, and struck the west side bank, coming to rest on its roof. EMS transported Hoffert to the Good Samaritan Hospital. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP. (Hays Post)
Man arrested for animal cruelty in Trego County
TREGO COUNTY—Recently, the WaKeeney Police Department received a possible cruelty to animals in progress call stating that a person was going to “shoot” and kill their dog in their backyard. Information was given to law enforcement stating the subject was armed with a .40 caliber handgun and had been consuming alcohol. The Trego Sheriff’s Office and Kansas State Patrol were called to assist. Upon investigation, law enforcement contacted the subject, who did not follow commands. Law enforcement initiated a less lethal means to subdue the suspect due to the subject’s uncooperative behavior. Steven Balock was taken into custody and was being held at the Trego County Jail on requested charges of felony cruelty to animals and felony interference with law enforcement. The animal was taken to an emergency veterinary clinic and was treated. All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. (Hays Post)
Two northwest Kansas men dead after two-vehicle crash
GRAHAM COUNTY—Two people died in an accident just after noon on Thursday, January 23rd, in Graham County. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2000 Nissan Frontier driven by Jeremiah Lacey Bell, 41, Hill City, was westbound on U.S. 24, five and one-half miles west of Hill City. The pickup traveled into the eastbound lane. The pickup and the eastbound 2018 Peterbilt 389 driven by Gregory Chad Burger, 54, Kensington, collided in the eastbound lanes. Both drivers were pronounced dead and were transported to Stinemetz Funeral Home. They were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP. (Hays Post)
