Twenty-four dogs removed from alleged hoarding situation at rural Kansas home

RENO COUNTY—Twenty-four dogs have been removed from what an area animal rescue described as a severe hoarding situation in Abbyville and are now receiving care through several shelters and rescue organizations across central Kansas. Melissa Gutierrez of Redemption Animal Rescue said it worked with the Reno County Sheriff's Office and Hutchinson Animal Shelter to remove the dogs from a small trailer where they had reportedly been living in unsanitary conditions. According to Gutierrez, the trailer contained fleas, feces, and urine. The dogs were heavily infested with fleas, and some were experiencing hair loss after persistent scratching. The Rescue said the dogs had also reportedly received little or no prior veterinary care, including vaccinations or spay and neuter procedures. Following their removal, the dogs were given flea baths and treatment. Redemption Animal Rescue is seeking donations to help cover the expenses. No information was immediately provided about whether authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the dogs or whether any citations or criminal charges are expected. (Hays Post)

Hays sets new record high at 112 degrees

HAYS—The City of Hays reached 112 degrees on Sunday, August 9th, setting a new record high for the City and breaking a record that had stood for 90 years. The previous record of 111 degrees was set in 1936. (Hays Post)

Two hospitalized after semi, pickup crash in northwest Kansas

SHERIDAN COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just after 9:00 p.m. on Monday, August 10th in Sheridan County. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2015 GMC Sierra driven by Morgan L. Riley, 29, Harrah, Oklahoma, was traveling northbound on Kansas 23 at the K383/U.S. 83 Junction. The driver ran a stop sign. A southwest-bound 2015 Peterbilt semi, driven by Jonathan D. Koehn, 44, Scotia, Nebraska, struck the pickup. EMS transported Riley to the hospital in Hoxie and Koehn to the hospital in Oberlin. Riley was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP. Mulvane teacher resigns as police investigate allegations involving youth cheer program funds

MULVANE—The Mulvane School Board accepted the resignation of a fifth-grade teacher who is also at the center of a police investigation into allegations involving money from a local youth cheer program. The Board voted 7-0 to accept Nicole Yarnell's resignation. The District did not say whether Yarnell's resignation was connected to the investigation. When asked about her employment status before the vote, the District told KAKE it does not publicly discuss personnel matters. Yarnell has not been charged with a crime. The cheer program at the center of the investigation is not affiliated with the Mulvane School District. However, Yarnell worked as a fifth-grade math teacher at Mulvane Grade School and, according to Mulvane Police, served as the head of the cheer program and was solely responsible for managing its finances. Parents allege money from the cheer program was used for personal expenses. (KAKE)

Woman, dog found dead in car at Kansas gas station

COWLEY COUNTY—Law enforcement continues investigating an unattended death in Cowley County. Just after 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 9th, police, along with fire and EMS, were dispatched to the parking lot of Casey's, located at 219 West 9th Avenue, for a report of an unresponsive individual inside a vehicle, according to the media release from the Winfield Police Department. First responders found a 56-year-old woman in the driver's seat who was pronounced deceased at the scene. A dog was also found deceased inside the vehicle. It is believed the dog died as a result of heat exposure inside the vehicle. The vehicle and the individual were from South Dakota. At this time, there is no evidence of foul play. The incident is being investigated as a possible medical emergency. The Cowley County Coroner was contacted, and an autopsy has been ordered. No name was released. (Hays Post)
