Illegal alien jailed on six counts of rape in Kansas

RILEY COUNTY—The Riley County Police Department arrested a man on multiple outstanding Riley County District Court warrants, as well as new additional charges from an incident that took place on Friday, July 17th. Just after 9:30 p.m. on that Friday, officers filed a report of aggravated domestic battery, domestic battery, criminal damage to property, intimidation of a witness, and interference with a law enforcement officer, according to a media release. A 24-year-old woman was listed as the victim. A known 41-year-old man identified as Emilio Soto, 41, of Manhattan, was arrested at approximately 7:36 p.m. on Friday. Soto was also arrested on an outstanding Riley County District Court warrant from 2016 for one count of domestic battery and two Riley County District Court warrants from 2020 for six counts of rape: offender is older than 18, and victim is 14 or younger; two counts of aggravated domestic battery; and one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child. Soto is being held on a total bond of $522,000.00, and police learned Soto is in the United States illegally. RCPD has been in contact with federal law enforcement partners. ICE agents did not participate in Soto's arrest, according to the RCPD. (Hays Post)

Child's hair was tangled in a kitchen mixer

MONTGOMERY COUNTY—First responders are alerting the public after a kitchen incident that could have led to serious injury. According to fire officials in the City of Independence, Kansas, within the last couple of weeks, their department responded to an emergency involving a child whose hair became entangled in a KitchenAid mixer. Fortunately, the child's mother acted quickly and immediately unplugged the mixer, preventing what could have been a much more serious injury, including a partial scalp injury. When working around equipment with moving parts—whether it's a kitchen appliance, power tool, garage equipment, or a vehicle—always take a safety precautions. (Hays Post)

Kansas zoo mourns the loss of beloved chimpanzee

SALINA—Rolling Hills Zoo is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Shudak, one of the Zoo's most beloved chimpanzees and a cherished member of the Rolling Hills Zoo family for nearly three decades. On Friday morning, July 10th, members of the animal care team discovered that Shudak had passed away during the night.
