Kansas National Guard Blackhawks take flight from Hays High
HAYS—Members of the Kansas National Guard were at Hays High School on Wednesday, April 29th, for a recruiting visit. They invited Hays community members, Hays USD 489 staff, and Pratt, Salina, and Great Bend community members and school staff to ride in two of the Guard's Black Hawk helicopters. The tours flew from Hays High around the city and back. Lt. Commander Adam Pawlosky of the Kansas National Guard Recruiting and Retention Battalion discussed with the participants some of the benefits of joining the Kansas National Guard. (Hays Post)
Hays man arrested for alleged knife threats at Burger King
HAYS—A Hays man was arrested after allegedly threatening coworkers with a knife at Burger King. Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler said officers responded to a verbal disturbance on April 14th in the 2700 block of Epworth Village. During the investigation, officers learned of an alleged previous incident on April 9th involving 20-year-old Dustin Hunter Darby. On that day at Burger King, Scheibler said Darby allegedly argued with a coworker near closing time and threatened the coworker with a pocket knife. Officers later located and arrested Darby on April 22nd after an investigation. Scheibler said Darby was allegedly found in possession of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and a nicotine product at the time of his arrest. He was charged with alleged aggravated assault. The day after the arrest, a second victim reported a separate alleged incident involving Darby. Scheibler said Darby allegedly pulled a knife on another coworker at Burger King on April 18th during work hours. That investigation resulted in a second requested aggravated assault charge. Northwest Kansas Walmart evacuated after bomb threat
SHERMAN COUNTY—Just before 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29th, an unidentified individual contacted Walmart, 2160 Commerce Road in Goodland, and reported multiple pipe bombs were inside the store and threatened to detonate them, according to a media release. Law enforcement, including the Goodland Police, the Sherman County Sheriff's Office, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, Goodland Rural Fire Department, Sherman County EMS, and the Kansas Highway Patrol, responded and safely evacuated the store. As a precaution, the roads surrounding Walmart were temporarily closed. A Kansas Highway Patrol K9 unit conducted a thorough search of the store and found no suspicious devices. The Goodland Police Department is aware of similar threats reported at Walmart stores in other states. (Hays Post)
Western Plains school receives threat, lockdown
RANSOM/BAZINE—Western Plains USD 106 released the following statement: “Today, April 30th, 2026, Western Plains USD 106 received a phone call regarding a threat of violence against the school, specifically the Western Plains North Campus. Lockdown procedures were initiated throughout the district, and law enforcement actively assisted with them at the North campus. The lockdown procedure went smoothly thanks to the efforts of our staff and our awesome students. The Western Plains community greatly appreciates the quick response that our emergency services provided to our district. Once law enforcement found no current threats at the school, students were dismissed through the district for the remainder of the day.” (Hays Post)
