Ground beef production facility opening in Garden City

GARDEN CITY—A large-scale ground beef production facility is opening in southwest Kansas. The plans for the Empirical Foods expansion include a 280,000-square-foot plant in Garden City that is expected to produce 95% lean ground beef. Information provided for Empirical's Garden City plant said the facility will bring more than 250 new jobs 'supported through training and education.' (KWCH)

Saline County animal shelter managers face animal cruelty charges

SALINE COUNTY—After the law enforcement investigation of the Salina Animal Shelter was turned over to the Saline County Attorney's Office, charges have been filed against the managers of the shelter. According to Saline County Attorney John Reynolds, he filed charges against SalinaAnimal Shelter managers, Monique Hawley and Andrea Murphy, on Wednesday, April 8th. Reynolds told Salina Post he filed three requested charges of Animal Cruelty on Hawley and Murphy, for the reported euthanasia procedures done on three puppies with parvovirus in December 2025. Fourteen-year-old arrested after missing Kansas girl found dead

BARTON COUNTY—Law enforcement is investigating the death of a missing Great Bend girl and has made an arrest. On Wednesday, April 8th, at 8:30 p.m., police responded to a call about a missing 14-year-old girl, according to a media release from the Great Bend Police. The girl was last reported to have been attending a class at Holy Family School, located at 4200 Broadway Avenue in Great Bend. The Great Bend Police Officers fielded multiple calls about potential locations and areas where the missing girl might be, but she was not found. Just after 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 9th, Great Bend Police Officers responded to the 4700 block of 17th Street Terrace in Great Bend, where the body of a girl was located behind a large dirt pile. She was determined to be deceased and has been positively identified. Her identity is currently being withheld to allow for notification of family members. Investigators and officers processed the crime scene, conducted numerous interviews, and executed multiple search warrants. A 14-year-old boy was arrested and transported to the Barton County Detention Center on requested charges of 1st Degree Murder. The Great Bend Police Department was assisted in this investigation by the Barton County Sheriff's Office, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, and the Great Bend Fire Department. (Hays Post)
