Wichita State receives an anonymous $1million gift for scholarships
WICHITA—Wichita State University announced a transformative $1 million gift from an anonymous 1958 graduate of the University of Wichita to support need-based scholarships in the W. Frank Barton School of Business, according to a media release from the University. The gift will directly benefit students who face financial challenges—particularly first-generation students—who make up nearly half of Wichita State's enrollment. (Hays Post)
Hays native, Vatican journalist dies
HAYS—Hays Catholic Schools announced the death on January 22nd of alumnus John L. Allen, Jr., 61, from cancer. Allen was a journalist reporting on the Vatican. He was the editor of the Catholic News website, Crux. He also worked for CNN and covered the Conclaves in 2005 and 2013. He wrote multiple books on the Catholic church. He was a 1983 graduate of TMP and earned degrees from Fort Hays State University and the University of Kansas. He was also honored by TMP with the Point of Light award. (Hays Post)
Kansas boy rescued from hole after sledding accident
HARVEY COUNTY—Emergency crews responded to a child stuck in a hole at Sand Creek Station on Saturday, January 24th, according to a social media report from Newton Fire and EMS. Upon arrival, just the fingertips of a 15-year-old boy were visible at ground level. The child was rescued from the hole and transported to the local hospital in stable condition for evaluation. He had been sledding with a friend, who notified a neighbor to call 911. Thanks to his quick thinking, this event had a positive outcome. Newton emergency crews reported they did not measure the hole, but it was about 12 inches wide. The 15-year-old was released from the hospital, is home, and is doing well. (Hays Post)
Man and woman accused of violent robbery in central Kansas
BARTON COUNTY—Just before 9:00 p.m. on Friday, January 23rd, police were dispatched to a report of a robbery in the 900 block of Jefferson in Great Bend, according to a media release. Upon officers’ arrival, the victim reported that Juan Prieto, 31, and Trinity Galliart, 30, had used physical force and stolen money from him. The victim also reported that Prieto and Galliart had left the scene in a white truck. A short time later, officers located the suspect vehicle as well as both suspects at a residence in the 2400 block of Cheyenne Drive in Great Bend. As a result of the investigation, both Prieto and Galliart were arrested on requested charges of Robbery and were transported to the Barton County Jail. (Hays Post)
