Spotlighting The Year…1968
* And So They Say: Frank Mitchell: “I do think the kids are learning to spell better than they did a few years ago.” Merton Van Eaton: “I don’t think much of those Monday holidays they are talking about. It will just give more people a chance to be killed.” Terry Odle: “It cost us $10.00 to get our honeymoon car cleaned up after our friends decorated it so beautifully.” Pudy Larson: “I never saw an election year when so few of the people of both parties seemed to be satisfied with any of the presidential candidates mentioned.”
* Keith Hansen had been promoted to Refuge Manager of the Kirwin National Wildlife Refuge in Kansas.
* Terry Eggers, 15, and his brother Bobby, 10, were injured in an accident when a pickup driven by Terry came over a hill that was being ascended by a big IHC truck driven by Cleo Baughman and rented from Glen Wenzl for wheat hauling. At the bottom of the hill, a couple of cars and an oil truck were waiting until the big truck had cleared the hill. Cleo was in his lane, but there wasn’t too much clearance, and Terry, in an effort to miss the truck and the other vehicles, applied the brakes and skidded on the loose gravel directly into the big truck. The IHC received considerable damage, and the pickup was demolished. Both boys received numerous cuts and bruises, with Bobby suffering a concussion and a deep gash over one eye. He lost all of the skin from one finger, which caused considerable concern. He also broke both bones in his right wrist.
* The wheat harvest was estimated to be about 85 percent finished. Some of the reporting yields were up to 30 bushels, but most were averaging from 10 to 12 bushels per acre. Early growing conditions were very poor, and there was hail in many sections of the county during the spring and summer.
*From The Feminine Slant By The Office Cat: As we see it, the only advantage of living in a trailer would be that you could move quickly if you didn’t like the neighbors or they didn’t like you.
* Looking Backward Fourteen Years Ago: The big harvest was just about over, and all the elevators were full with no cars available. Fields were making up to 40 bushels per acre. Miss Earlyne Buss and Dean Ives’s marriage occurred on June 27th. Over 600 people had registered at the Butler and Vallette Store during its 50th anniversary.
* Many of Mrs. Marie Hazen’s friends and relatives celebrated her 90th birthday with an open house at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Adryn Glendening. Betty Hunter and Delores Glendening served lunch and little cakes and were assisted by Brenda Hunter, and Deena and Todd Glendening.
