What Was Going On 14 Years Ago
An organizational meeting of the Capital Campaign Committee was held for the new Stockton Health Clinic. Dr. Mike Oller and Dr. Beth Loney were interested in starting their rural practice in Stockton, and they had plans to come to the town by the following summer.
Patriotism and the preservation of war memorials were emphasized at the Memorial Day Services. James Kelly delivered the soulful Taps at the Stockton Cemetery.
The winners of the Rooks County Farm Bureau Ag in their Classroom program were Devin Eustice (Stockton Grade School), Jared Casey (Sacred Heart Grade School, Parker Krob (Plainville Grade School), and Amber Desbien (Palco Grade School).
Stockton Grade School teacher Kelli Wright had just completed her 25th year in education, and she was presented with the traditional bell and plaque.
Sheila Latham and Pam Lewallen, residents of Rooks County, were appointed to the Rooks County Healthcare Foundation Board of Directors.
Helen Darlene Sammons (1919), Vinta R. “Babe” Butler (1921), and Daphne L. Spencer (1929) passed away.
Looking Back 14 Years Ago (1996)—Stockton City Manager Dan Pickett announced his resignation. Lee Kibbee, Tish Kibbee, and Tony Bice had represented the Rooks County 4-H Shooting Sports Rifle Program at the NRA Prone Kansas State Championship Shooting Match and captured first place.
56 Years Ago, Spotlighting The Year 1954— The collapse of the Big Top at the Al G. Kelly and Miller Brothers Circus could have been a disaster, but only minor injuries were reported. A high wind struck the tent, and in a matter of seconds, it collapsed partially on the ground. The Star Motel at the east edge of Stockton had been sold to John Dietrich of Lincoln, Nebraska. The groundbreaking of the foundation work for the new Stockton Production Credit Association building had taken place.
What Stocktonites Were Doing 98 Years Ago in 1912—The new church’s dedication in Farmington Township was met with a big and enthusiastic gathering of people. Little Edwin, the five-year-old son of Morris Bartlett, fell off the hen house on Wednesday of last week, struck hard on a box, and broke both bones of his left forearm. This is the third time the same arm has been broken. Ashley Ives has purchased seven lots in Block 33 south of Mrs. Bert Howard by trading in a quarter of land south of Woodston.
Lorine Walker was the Solomon Valley Manor Neighbor of the Month for May.
The Nova Theatre was showing the movie “Shrek Forever After.”
