Jail deputy allegedly brought contraband into the jail
WICHITA — Last week, law enforcement authorities received information concerning a Sedgwick County detention deputy bringing contraband into the jail, according to Lt. Benjamin Blick. The detectives assigned to the case discovered the 21-year-old detention deputy, Andrew Gilbert was involved in trafficking contraband. Due to the allegations and evidence ascertained, it was determined enough probable cause existed to arrest him for trafficking contraband. Additional charges could be applied, depending on the results of the ongoing investigation. Gilbert began employment with the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office in June of 2019. On Friday he was placed on suspension without pay and was no longer in custody, according to online jail records. (Kansas.com)
7-year-old dies from injuries in house fire
TOPEKA — A 7-year-old boy died from injuries in a fire at a Topeka home on Monday. Just before 7 a.m., fire crews were advised there were possibly residents trapped in the home. Upon arrival, they found the home with heavy fire and smoke coming from the first floor. Fire crews made an interior attack on the fire. They located and rescued a 7-year-old boy and an adult female, who were both transported to Stormont Vail Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The boy later died. Firefighters quickly brought the fire under control, and no other homes were damaged. After the fire was out, a third resident of the home was transported to the hospital to treat non-life-threatening injuries. A fourth occupant was not injured. (JCPost.com)
Man arrested for driving Camaro in reverse across Salina
SALINA — Just after 7:30 p.m. last Saturday, the Salina patrol officers were alerted to the report of a Chevrolet Camaro driving in reverse westbound on E. Crawford Street near Marymount Road, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester. An officer located the Camaro headed north on Ninth Street and attempted to stop it. The Camaro, however, continued and eventually turned west on Park Street before pulling over in the 700 block of Park Street, facing the wrong way on the street, according to Forrester. The driver, identified as Anthony Sustaita, 24, of Salina, was arrested on requested charges of misdemeanor flee and elude, reckless driving, and driving while suspended or revoked. Sustaita told police that the Camaro was having mechanical issues and he had to drive it in reverse. (SalinaPost.com)
Store evacuated, woman questioned about suspicious device
TOPEKA — Just before noon last Sunday, officers were called to a Walmart store with the report of a suspicious device. Employees located a cylinder object with electrical wires coming out of it on top of one of the vending machines near the west entrance, according to Police Lt. Manuel Munoz. Officers arrived and located the item and contacted a member of the police bomb unit who responded to the scene. Walmart personnel evacuated the building while officers investigated. The investigation determined that the item was not an explosive device and was rendered safe. Officers on the scene did detain a female as a person of interest and are currently still investigating. Walmart reopened the business once the scene was cleared by officers. (JCPost.com)
Two adults, child dead after violent incident
LARNED — Saturday, Jan. 8, the Larned Police Department received a 911 call from a man who discovered three individuals dead inside a residence in Larned, according to Pawnee County Attorney Doug McNett. At the scene, first responders located 44-year-old Shala M. Smith, 44-year-old Jon B. Smith, and 12-year-old Carver A. Smith all of Larned, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. They each died from gunshot wounds. They were pronounced dead by the coroner at the scene, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. KBI agents and the Crime Scene Response Team responded to Larned to investigate. No threat to the public is believed to exist related to this incident.
