SW Kansas firefighter/paramedic dies while on duty

FORD COUNTY—Authorities in Ford County are mourning the death of Ford County Fire and EMS Firefighter/Paramedic William Cory 'Liam' Price. According to the organization's media page, Price died on Sunday, April 19th, after suffering a medical emergency while on duty. Price has served with the department and the citizens of Ford County with loyalty and dedication since September of 2018. Authorities released no additional details. (Hays Post)

Twelve-year-old Kansas girl airlifted to hospital after shooting

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement is investigating a shooting that injured a girl at a home in Atchison. Just after 11:45 p.m. on Thursday, April 16th, police responded to the 1400 block Commercial in Atchison to investigate a shooting that had just occurred, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson. Multiple shots had been fired at a residence where four persons were on and near a porch. The gunfire struck a 12-year-old girl. EMS transported her to Amberwell Hospital and subsequently airlifted her to a Kansas City hospital. Officers and detectives worked throughout the night following leads. This was not a drive-by shooting, according to Wilson. The suspects were on foot. Police had not released any additional details the following morning. (Hays Post)

Kansas flags flown at half-staff to honor volunteer firefighter

TRIBUNE—Governor Kelly directed flags across the state to be flown at half-staff in honor of a western Kansas volunteer firefighter who died in the line of duty. Greeley County firefighter Carl 'Levi' Evans died on April 8th, after suffering an edema issue during training, according to a post on the Kansas Fire Marshal Facebook page. The governor's office said he was also a former deputy sheriff. He leaves behind a wife and two sons. (KAKE NEWS)

Man dies from injuries in northwest Kansas house fire

DECATUR COUNTY—The State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of a fatal fire in Oberlin. Just before 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 21st, Decatur County Emergency Communications received a 911 report of a house fire near US Highway 83/Buffalo Avenue and Hall Street in the City of Oberlin, according to Sheriff David Wachendorfer. First responders found smoke showing from a single-family home in the 200 block of South Buffalo Avenue. Sheriff's deputies attempted to enter the residence to locate the occupant, but the house was filled with smoke. After breaching the front door, the first responders saw a person lying motionless approximately six feet into the house through the smoke. The first responders entered the residence and extricated the subject to the front yard, where life-saving measures were started. The occupant, Randy Allen Spencer, was transported to Decatur Health, where medical treatment was continued. Oberlin Fire crews quickly gained a knockdown of the fire within the residence. Spencer was later flown from Decatur Health to receive advanced medical care in Lincoln, Nebraska. Spencer died of his injuries in Lincoln on Wednesday. US Highway 83 was closed for several hours from Hall Street to Q7 Road while the incident was mitigated (Hays Post)
