Plans moving forward for the I-70 travel plaza north of Hays

HAYS—“Two economic development incentives requested from the City of Hays for a planned full-service 24/7 Travel Plaza and convenience store north of Interstate 70 are a good investment,” said Mayor Mason Ruder at the City's Commission work session. Commissioner Shaun Musil expects to see more business develop in the area over time. The commissioners unanimously agreed to move two resolutions for public hearings to the next meeting, one for a Tax Increment Financing (TIF) project plan and the other for a Community Improvement District (CID). Police report card skimmer on gas pumps in cental Kansas

SALINE COUNTY—Law enforcement is investigating after finding credit card skimmers on gas pumps at a station in Salina. On Tuesday, February 24th, police were dispatched to Flying J Gas Station, 2250 North Ohio, in Salina for the report of a card skimmer found on one of the diesel pumps, according to Salina Police Captain James Feldman. On February 13th, a business in Salina reported using the diesel pump and noticed fraudulent charges on their credit card. Officers confirmed the discovery of a skimmer on the diesel pump. Police warned the public that if they had used any of the pumps in the last month, they should be on the lookout for fraudulent charges. Skimmers are illegal, covert devices installed over or inside genuine card readers at ATMs, fuel pumps, and point-of-sale terminals to steal credit/debit card data. (Hays Post)

Small plane makes emergency landing in Kansas cornfield

LYON COUNTY—A pilot and passenger avoided injury after an emergency plane landing just before 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 23rd, in Lyon County. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1977 Grumman American fixed-wing single-engine aircraft piloted by 41-year-old Joseph Ira Glover of Defuniak Springs, Florida, made an emergency landing when the propeller on the aircraft stopped working. The plane came down in a cornfield at 3951 N K-99 just southwest of the Road 400 Intersection. Glover and a passenger were not injured. The FAA and NTSB will investigate. (Hays Post)

Small earthquake shakes central Kansas

SALINE COUNTY—A small earthquake shook central Kansas on Wednesday, February 25th. Just after 2:00 p.m., a 3.5 magnitude quake was centered approximately three miles east of Assaria in Saline County, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. There were no reports of damage, according to the Saline County Sheriff's Office. (Hays Post)
