BARBER COUNTY—Early Tuesday, July 2nd, crews restored power to customers impacted by the outage due to an oil spill, according to Southern Pioneer Electric. According to the Barber County Sheriff, Kansas Highway 2 west of Kiowa from Northstar to Highway 281 was shut down due to the oil well blowing across the highway. The power was also out in the community of Hardtner and outside Kiowa. Oil from the well near Pioneer infrastructure coated lines and caused them to trip and open. (Hays Post)

Laboratory testing samples collected from the Nicodemus Township indicated no evidence of bacteriological contamination, and all other conditions that placed the system at risk were deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. Old feud leads Kansas man to shoot at father, daughter stuck in a ditch, officials say
RENO COUNTY—A 52-year-old Kansas man remained jailed Tuesday, July 2nd, in Reno County after shooting a rifle and revolver at a man and his daughter after her truck got stuck in the ditch next to his property, Reno County Captain Steve Lutz said. Thomas Morrison remained jailed on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and aggravated child endangerment. The shooting happened around 7:46 p.m. Saturday, June 29th, around Trail West Road and Langdon Road near Plevna in rural Reno County. The suspect told officers it was over a years-long feud he had with the 59-year-old Plevna man, Lutz said. “The victim and us are still trying to figure out what the deal is,” Lutz said, adding the victim was unsure what that feud was about. “I don’t think it’s ever been established, really.” Officers recovered the two guns the suspect allegedly shot at the victims with from his yard. He reportedly fired four shots from a .22 caliber revolver and two more from a long rifle. Lutz said the only thing struck by the gunfire was a tree. He said they don’t believe alcohol “or any of that” was a factor. Morrison was arrested at his home. The sheriff’s office said the daughter was following her father home in the truck from “working in the field” when she got stuck in the ditch. They used the tractor she was following to pull out the truck. The shooting happened then. The father got the vehicle freed and called 9-1-1. Lutz said the daughter is a juvenile and would not release her age. (Wichita Eagle)
