Biking For A Cause
William Galloway raising awareness for brain injuries
William Galloway made a stop in Stockton on Tuesday, April 7th during his cross-country bicycle trip to raise awareness for brain injuries. Fifteen yeas ago, Galloway was hit by a drunk driver. The accident resulted in a traumatic brain injury, making concentration difficult and causing seizures, which in turn makes it difficult for him to keep a job. Before the accident Galloway was a truck driver but can no longer pass the physical.
Galloway went through six years of therapy after his brain injury and had to relearn how to talk. He has trouble remembering things from before his accident and gets headaches, which frustrates him. The tremendous headaches are also a factor as to why it is hard for him to hold down a steady job. That is when he decided to travel across the country looking for organizations or programs that could help him and to educate people about his type of injury.
So in October of 2017 at the age of 56 Galloway left his home state of New Jersey and started peddling, and he has biked across the country five times telling his story along the way. He said that the best part of living the way he does is meeting people and experiencing the kindness of strangers along the way. It takes him about three months to get from one side of the country to the other, and while he peddles he listens to classic rock. His favorite band is AC/DC. He is on his second bike, which was donated to him by a bicycle company in Orlando called Catrike.
His story has been picked up by news outlets across the country, and due to the power of social media, his story has spread. He has recently set up a GoFundMe to help him with food, his cell phone bill and short-term housing, though he usually finds a place to sleep outside whichever city he is near at the time when he decides to stop for the night.
