Woodston News

Driving through Cawker City this past Tuesday, June 15, I stopped at an interesting shop called, “Eyegores’ Odditorium and Museum.” The owner Matt Alford, came from Richmond, Va., searching for a cheaper place to live. He expressed his opinion of the area believing the growth in tourism will just increase because of the Glen Elder Lake and area attractions. The shop had amusing and interesting things and would make a great day-trip for kids to visit. One wall has “rearends” of all kinds of animals. An old sign reads, “Warning, unattended children will be sold to the circus.” The place is open on weekends. Channel 12 News, Wichita, is to come for an interview.
Clay Center has an ongoing project called, “A Mural Movement.” Artists have created murals around town. I took time to see several and they are amazing. Clay Center also has a small zoo and park.
After “meandering,” I finally made it to Riley to meet my sisters and brother for our birthday get-together at the Farmhouse Café in Riley. Those attending were: Nadine and Delmar Iseli of Marion, Norma Sharp, rural Riley, Dale and Melva Stillwagon, Bennington, Thelma Lexow, rural Chapman and me. Afterwards, we went to Norma’s home for dessert and visiting. Steve’s sister, Janie Hieger, Wamego, came to get the Woodston church pews that I bought. I spent the night and helped Norma with yardwork on Wednesday before returning home.
Saturday evening, June 19, Steve and I met Dan and Michele Melton, Walton, in Salina for an early Father’s Day supper at Martinelli’s. We delivered Michele’s Woodston church pew. I found the kitchen shop on Santa Fe “Apron Strings” that carries the great jelly from Hutchinson with the brand name, “Sticky Spoons.”
Most farmers and ranchers are spraying for noxious weed, musk thistle. One of Steve’s fuel truck drivers sent a recipe for Musk Thistle Jelly:
5 cups sugar
1 package Sure-Jell
Red food coloring
3 cups water
Wash and steep twelve large blossoms in water. Skim off the scum and follow basic instructions on Sure-Jell box. This gels really fast so work quickly.
Our rain gauge was probably not accurate for Saturday night’s wind storm and rain showing .25”. Betty Lala reported .40” and Bonita Oliva .80”. Driving home from Salina, the temperature dropped from 96 degrees to 66 degrees within two hours. Just to make everyone feel cooler, summer officially began on Sunday, June 20.

On Father’s Day Sunday morning, June 20, Peggy Mullen played, “God Of Our Fathers” for the opening hymn. Peggy read a poem titled, “Grandpa.” “Happy Birthday” was sung for Linda Melton. Kirby Mullen offered prayers and the Prayer Hymn was “What A Friend We Have In Jesus.” The Lord’s Prayer was recited in unison. Steven Melton gathered the offering. Kirby Mullen and Steven served communion. Gwen Cooper, rural Alton, was the speaker and read scripture from the first chapter of John. Gwen treated us to, “Amazing Grace,” played on her saxophone. Her message dealt with Jesus choosing his disciples from common fishermen and made them “fishers of men”. Whatever we do, we need the strength of God to help us. God has a plan for each of us to follow. God blesses us in our life’s calling and we should be happy and enjoy our life. In closing, Gwen played, “How Great Thou Art” and “Thank You, Lord.” Our closing hymn was, “Faith of Our Fathers.” The altar had a toy John Deere combine and yellow flowers representing wheat harvest. Sugar cookies were given for Father’s Day. Next Sunday, our speaker will be Harry Purdum of Stockton.
