With 15 family members present for the July 4th celebration, breakfast was in shifts starting at 8:00 a.m., as the dining table will seat at the most 8 people at a time. Some of the family even made it to morning church services. After services, their pyrotechnist (three or four of the men) donned their special shirts that read, "Fireworks Director: If I Run, You Run!" Several of the family went swimming—enjoying the water slide greatly.

About 3:00 p.m., the family gathered in the lower park for a picnic lunch of hamburgers, hot dogs and all the trimmings. Day-time fireworks were set off during picnic time.

Evening found chairs set out in the front yard and a large arsenal of fireworks arranged on a long table. Instructions from the pyrotechnist included, "If anything goes wrong, grab the little girls and run.” Once during the evening it did. The beautiful fireworks show began after 9:00 p.m. and continued for nearly three hours! After that, cleanup was in order, using a shovel, broom and large trash bins, the street was cleaned, the neighbor's yard policed and our yard picked clean.

Even after the late night, everyone had to leave before noon on the 5th in order to be home by the 6th.

Those here for the celebration were: Harry and Willardene Purdum, host; Harry C. Purdum; Ellen and Dewey Bateman, Corbin and Rainy Bateman from Lubbock, Texas; Danae Fish of Amarillo, Texas; Sydney and Nick Davenport from Fort Worth, Texas; Willard, Tiffany, Isabelle and Violet Purdum, from Rock Springs, Wyo.; Jonathan Kinion from Wichita; and Walter Eades from Lyons.
