RUNNING ON "E"? I'd be surprised if you've ever heard of Francis Powers. He was a "nobody" who grew up in a Virginia coal town back in the 1930's and 40s. He had typical mountain grit and drive. His dad wanted better for his son and so pushed him to go to college to be a doctor. That wasn't him. As a boy, the family went to a county fair that changed his life. That day his dad paid the steep price of $2.50 for Francis to take a ride—in a Piper Cub. He never lost the thrill of the skies from that day on. Francis ended up joining the USAF and later signed on with the CIA. This coal town boy's career included flying reconnaissance missions in the infamous U-2 plane over Russia. He made history in 1960 when the Russians shot down, captured, and then convicted him of espionage. Long story short—he later flew a news helicopter in California which crashed, killing him and the cameraman. This man who flew dangerous, life-threatening missions in the most advanced aircraft needlessly died. Cause of death—he ran out of gas. Literally. The faulty gas gauge had been unknowingly fixed causing him to under-fill the tank. So what's the spiritual application? It's pretty basic. We need to make sure we're not running on "E." The Psalmist paints the reality of two paths when he wrote, "Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night" (Psalm 1:1-2). This Psalm makes it clear that the ungodly cannot prosper because their path in life is a path of sin leading to God's judgment. However, there's hope for those who, by God's grace, choose a different path. The difference is God—and continually seeking Him by delighting in His Word! Are you keeping your spiritual tank full? If you've never memorized Psalm 1, doing so might keep your tank full this week!
