Amish-inspired Kansas restaurant to close after five decades

PLEASANTVIEW—Dutch Kitchen Restaurant, a Reno County staple for more than five decades, closed at the end of May. The restaurant, located at 6803 West Kansas Highway 61 just west of Hutchinson, had been open for 55 years. Deron Nisley said the decision was difficult, but his health made it necessary. Dutch Kitchen, an Amish-inspired restaurant known for home-cooked meals and homemade pies, had long served customers from the Hutchinson area and travelers along the highway. The restaurant offered breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with 72 varieties of whole pies available by special order. (Hays Post)

Driver hospitalized after semi crashed through multiple fences

TREGO COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 8:00 a.m. on Monday, May 25th, in Trego County. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2025 Freightliner Cascadia, driven by James T. Turner, 59, Stillwater, Oklahoma, was westbound on Interstate 70 just east of K-147. The semi traveled off the roadway gradually, then traveled around 1,800 feet through multiple fences and stopped in a quasi-jackknife, facing south, in the north ditch. The driver had a suspected medical issue, which caused the vehicle to leave the road. EMS transported him to Wesley Medical Center. He was properly restrained, according to KHP. (Hays Post)

Former western Kansas USPS postmaster pleads guilty to theft

WICHITA—A former U.S. Postal Service employee pleaded guilty to using her position as postmaster to steal tens of thousands of dollars in government funds. According to court documents, Joyce L. Smith, 51, of Wichita, pleaded guilty to one count of theft by government employee. Smith previously worked as the postmaster for a post office in Scott City. Between January 2023 and February 2025, Smith embezzled about $57,400.00 from the USPS. The U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General is investigating the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron Smith is prosecuting the case. (Hays Post)

Kansas woman lost over $10,00.00 in phone scam

SALINE COUNTY—Between May 14th and May 22nd, a 67-year-old woman reported a man contacted her by phone and told her she 'won a sweepstakes, resulting in winning cash and a brand new car,' according to the Saline County Sheriff's Office. The man advised her that to receive the prizes she needed to make payments. The victim then opened a bank account in her name and provided the account information to the scammer. Investigators determined she lost a total of $11,000.00. The sheriff's office reminds everyone, 'If you think you have been scammed or have possibly come into contact with a scam, please contact the non-emergency number of local law enforcement.'
