The Rooks County Free Fair holds a special place in the heart of Roger and Gwen Cooper of Alton. Not only do they enjoy the opportunity to visit with others while taking in the sights, sounds, food and other pleasures the Fair offers, but it also gives them a chance each year to re-create their first date. Yes, the Coopers’ “official” first date was at the Rooks County Free Fair…50 years ago! “Each year we try to make it back to the Fair, to not just re-create out first date, but to remember that our lives together actually started at the Rooks County Free Fair,” said Roger. Who knew a simple kiss at the carnival would turn into 50+ years of shared memories. “What started out as a simple kiss at the top of the Ferris wheel ‘sealed the deal,’ and I knew that she was the one I wanted to spend the rest of my life with,” Roger stated. The Coopers recognize they have been blessed in so many ways through the past 50 years. Roger noted, “As we look back to that first date, we realize what an incredible journey we have been on, how the Lord has blessed our lives in such great ways, and how our love for each other continues to grow each and every day!” Although the Ferris wheel has not been a part of the Fair since the pandemic hit, it is slated to be on the fairgrounds next year, and you can bet Roger and Gwen will not pass up the opportunity to re-create their 51st first date!
