RCH Board President Jeff VanDyke started out the regular board meeting on Sept. 23, 2008 in the new facility by welcoming everyone to the new facility and reminisced about a day five years prior when the Board was sitting at the old hospital and wondering what it would be like to sit in a brand new facility.

The Stockton Tigers’ two-game win streak came to an abrupt end on Friday when the Tigers were blanked by a talented Victoria squad, 50-0. The contest was called at the end of the first half due to the mercy rule.

The Stockton Junior High Football Squad moved their record to 2-2 on the season with a 60-8 win over Natoma. The Tigers took the opening kickoff and marched down the field to score on a two-yard run by Zach Lowry just under two minutes into the game.

The Lady Tigers were in Osborne where they competed in a five-team tournament with Sylvan Grove, Lakeside, Logan and host Osborne participating. The Lady Tigers were 1-3 on the day.

Strider members Richelle Paulson, Shaina Ott, Jenny Nelson, Brenna Schlaegel, Kacey Scott, Brooke Kee and Maggie Spires entertained the crowd at the football game against Sylvan Unified.

Cody Foster, formerly of Stockton, pictured with Congressman Jerry Moran, was in Washington, D.C. office Sept. 23, 2008, for an Advisors Excel meeting.

JaLynn Paulson and Ryan Thacker of Hays proudly announced the birth of a son, Braxton Lee, born Sept. 10, 2008 at Hays Medical Center. Local grandparents are Richard and Annette Paulson, Woodston; Charles Campbell, Kathy Campbell, and Viola Paulson of Woodston.

Obituaries were published for Alfred Schleusener (1913); Creta I. Hilgers (1924); and Elizabeth M. Brobst (1923).

And So They Say — Donna Rostocil, Zurich: “Your paper this week was just great. If I was any kind of writer, I’d write a letter. From the front page to the back, I just loved it.” Elna Kollman: “I noticed that the Paul Boyer Museum of Animated Carvings made the ‘8 Wonders of Kansas’ list. I’ve been there and it is really something to see!”

Looking Back 14 Years Ago (1994) — Frank Walker gave the county $40,000 to complete the center display section of the new museum. Stockton was welcoming a new doctor, Kyle D. Garrison D.O. The D.A.R.E. program was initiated in Stockton Grade School. Jim Circle was campaigning as a write-in candidate for county commissioner.

56 Years Ago, Spotlighting the Year... 1952 — The county commissioners of Rooks County called an election to be held in conjunction with the general election on November 4 to vote bonds in the sum of $275,000.00 for the purpose of building a county hospital. And So They Say: a Stockton businessman: “Who would be mean enough to put sand and gravel in my gas tank?” From The Feminine Slant By The Office Cat: “The candidates are slinging mud, And tossing alibies, And calling names and getting mad, And telling bareface lies.”

What Stocktonites Were Doing 98 Years Ago... 1910 — The tiling for the roof of the library building has arrived and the man to put it on is expected daily. Ira McNutt of Woodston met with an accident while at Concordia, from which he narrowly escaped with his life. He was inspecting the electric light plant, and while wearing his reading glasses, making his vision defective, he walked directly into the big belt connecting the engine with the dynamo, which threw him through a small aperature in the floor into the basement of the power house. Fortunately he fell off the belt onto the floor, and thus escaped being drawn into the machinery and crushed to death.
